General information

The Single Panel Benzodiazepine Rapid Test (Urine) is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the detection of Oxazepam (main metabolite) in the urine at a threshold-limit concentration of 300ng/ml. This test will detect other related compounds, please refer to the Analytical Specificity table in this package insert.

Benzodiazepines are drugs frequently prescribed for the symptomatic treatment of anxiety and sleep disorders. They produce their effects through specific receptors involving a neurochemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). Due to their increased safety and efficacy, benzodiazepines have replaced barbiturates in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia.

Benzodiazepines are also used as sedatives before surgery and medical procedures and for the treatment of seizures and alcohol withdrawal. The risk of physical dependence increases if benzodiazepines are taken regularly (e.g. daily) for several months, especially in higher than normal doses. Stopping taking it suddenly can lead to symptoms such as sleep problems, gastrointestinal disorders, malaise, loss of appetite, sweating, tremor, weakness, anxiety and alterations in perception. Only some traces (less than 1%) of benzodiazepines are excreted unchanged in the urine; most of the concentration in urine is conjugated drug. The detection period of benzodiazepines in urine is 3-7 days.

The BZO test (Urine) is a rapid screening test that can be performed without the use of instrumentation. The test uses an antibody to selectively detect high levels of benzodiazepines in the urine. The BZO (Urine) test indicates positive results when the benzodiazepine concentration in the urine exceeds the cut-off level.

Test procedure

Interpret results within minutes for simultaneous specimen collection and screening.

  1. Allow the test, urine specimen, and/or controls to reach room temperature (15-30ºC) prior to testing.
  2. Bring the pouch to room temperature before opening it. Remove the test panel from the sealed pouch and use it within one hour.
  3. Remove the cap.
  4. With the arrow pointing toward the urine specimen, immerse the test panel vertically in the urine specimen for at least 10 to 15 seconds. Immerse the dipstick to at least the level of the wavy lines, but not above the arrow on the test panel.
  5. Replace the cap and place the test panel on a non-absorbent flat surface.
  6. Start the timer and wait for the colored line(s) to appear.
  7. The drug strip result should be read at 5 minutes. Do not interpret the result after 10 minutes.

Interpretation of the results

Negative result:* A colored line appears in the Control region (C) and colored lines appear in the Test region (T). This negative result means that the concentrations in the urine sample are below the designated cut-off levels for a particular drug tested.

*NOTE: The shade of the colored lines(s) in the Test region (T) may vary. The result should be considered negative whenever there is even a faint line.

Positive result: A colored line appears in the Control region (C) and NO line appears in the Test region (T). The positive result means that the drug concentration in the urine sample is greater than the designated cut-off for a specific drug.

Invalid result: No line appears in the Control region (C). Insufficient specimen volume or incorrect procedural techniques are the most likely reasons for Control line failure. Read the directions again and repeat the test with a new test card. If the result is still invalid, contact us.
